MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

The National Highway Safety Administration reports that in 2006, over 4,800 motorcyclists were killed. This is an increase of 5 percent of motorcyclists killed in 2005. Over the past 10 years, the number of motorcyclists injured has risen by 37.5 percent, with 88,000 motorcyclists that were injured during 2006*. In Iowa 86 percent of motorcycle deaths involved those without helmets, 21 percent of motorcycle deaths included alcohol. Read More >>

TRUCKING ACCIDENTS   FELA / TRAIN ACCIDENTS

In 2006, commercial vehicles registered in the United States totaled 107,943,782*. Although truck drivers exercise above average safety precautions, no one is immune from the dangers of weather, road hazards, or the actions of other drivers, even truck drivers. The government, with the cooperation of trucking companies, has made great strides in reducing the accidents involving commercial vehicles, and accidents have decreased by 3.4% between 2005 and 2006. Nationally, commercial trucks accounted for only 11.7% of all fatalities in motor vehicle accidents, and only 4.1% of all injuries. There are more than 100,000 miles of rail line throughout the United States. While passenger use has declined, rail transportation still plays a vital role in shipping freight and goods. While rail transportation is vital to the economy, it comes at a heavy cost. Thousands of workers suffer at-work injury or death while employed by railroads annually. Passenger accidents, while rare, have the potential to cause severe harm. Most importantly, a train strikes a vehicle or pedestrian at a crossing at an average rate of once every two hours. Not only do these accidents injure and kill those struck by the train, but they can cause derailments and injure or kill the train crews and passengers as well.
